From Scrolling to Creating: A Guide to Using Social Media Wisely

As everyone knows, we are living in a period commonly referred to as the “digital age,” a term that has become almost impossible to avoid. We do not know when or even if this era will come to an end, nor whether digitalization will continue to grow.

However, there is one clear and undeniable truth: even if we cannot fully control the direction of this era, we can control our own behaviors and personal development within it.

We can manage how much time we spend on social media, how much we scroll, and whether we lose ourselves in the process. The issue is not completely giving up social media, but rather questioning how we use it and how we can make it more effective and productive.

This is exactly where our control lies. In other words, it is possible to transform the time we spend on social media into something more conscious, creative, and productive. Learning how to use screens more efficiently and effectively, without losing ourselves, begins precisely at this point.

1) First, you can identify how much time you spend in front of screens.

Today, most applications and almost every smartphone offer features that allow users to track their screen time. For example, Instagram includes a section called “Your activity,” where you can see how much time you spend on the app and monitor your time management. Through this section, you can set daily usage limits and add reminders. In this way, instead of completely abandoning social media, you can use it within self-defined boundaries and in a more conscious manner.

Additionally, you can benefit from applications that measure your phone and computer usage in detail. Tools such as Screen Time and Digital Wellbeing help you become more aware of your digital habits and manage your screen time more healthily.

2) You can turn social media from a distraction into a controlled tool.

Constant scrolling and watching short-form videos gradually reduce our attention span. Many people now struggle to focus even on a single episode of a TV series or a two-hour movie. Recognizing this shift, some streaming platforms have introduced features that allow content to be watched at faster speeds. Although these features may seem beneficial at first glance, in the long run they actually reinforce distraction.

In an era where everything is accelerated and “fast living” is glorified, social media makes us feel as if we are constantly missing out on something. Yet life is already moving fast enough.

For this reason, we need to slow down from time to time, lift our heads from our screens, and realize that we are not truly missing anything. There are simple but effective ways to do this. For instance, avoiding screen use at least one hour before sleep and resisting the habit of checking social media or watching reels immediately after waking up.

Similarly, instead of watching something while eating, you can try focusing solely on your meal. Creating 5–10 minute phone-free moments throughout the day can also be highly beneficial. During these short breaks, you can take a walk, practice breathing exercises, or meditate to relax your mind.

3) You can adopt habits that support your digital well-being.

In a time when we are constantly exposed to screens, taking regular breaks is essential for our digital health. You can think of this as a form of digital detox and consciously refrain from using social media for a certain period. Although this may be challenging for individuals who feel dependent on social media, even staying away from it for just one day can create a noticeable difference. Of course, the length of this break is entirely up to you.

You might start with a one-day detox and gradually extend it to two days a week or even longer periods. The key point is not to disconnect completely from the digital world, but to learn how to build a healthier and more balanced relationship with it.

4) You can transform social media into a space for production and learning.

Instead of using social media solely for consumption, turning it into a space for learning and creation is an important step toward not losing ourselves in the digital age.

Rather than constantly watching others’ content, producing content aligned with your interests or following accounts that genuinely contribute to your growth can make the time you spend on social media more meaningful. Watching educational videos, reading inspiring texts, sharing knowledge, or expressing your own thoughts through small creative outputs can move your relationship with the digital world toward a more conscious and healthy direction.

Because over time, you become what you follow and consume. In this way, social media can shift from being an exhausting and draining space to a tool that supports growth, nourishment, and empowerment.

In conclusion, the real issue in the digital age is not completely distancing ourselves from screens, but recognizing the relationship we have with them and managing it consciously. As long as we set our own boundaries, choose what we consume, and remember to slow down from time to time, the digital world ceases to be a threat. On the contrary, when used correctly, social media can become a powerful tool that opens space for learning, creativity, and self-development. When we give control not to our screens but to ourselves, it becomes possible to find direction instead of getting lost in the digital age.
